Care for your hair at home?

woman with stunning afro hair

Your hair is one of the first things that people notice about you, but with the weather, dry shampoo and leaving it a little too long between cuts, it often doesn’t look it’s best. Recent research has found that 49% of us haven’t been to the hairdresser in the last year, and prefer to look after our locks at home.

The hair transplant experts at Crown Clinic have put together their guide to the top five signs that you need to visit the professionals. Read on to find out what these are:

1.Your hair is dull
If your hair is looking a bit lacklustre, flat or dull, it’s almost certainly time to book a hairdresser appointment. You’ll probably need a trim to get rid of split ends, and your hairdresser will be able to advise you on the products and treatments you should be using to get your hair back to it’s shiny, bouncy best.

2.The ends are dry and split
If you can actually see split ends on your hair, this is your hair crying out for help! Split ends happen for a number of reasons, including dehydration, so make sure to use an intense conditioner, drink plenty of water, and get to the hairdresser, pronto!

3.You’re getting more tangles
Tangled hair and knots are a key sign of unhealthy hair. Whether it’s the products you’re using, or split ends and dryness, your hairdresser will be able to give you a trim (and some top tips) to make your hair silky in no time.

4.Drying your hair is taking longer than usual
If your hair seems to take forever to try, it’s probably a sign that you’re in desperate need of a trim. Thick, overgrown hair and split ends can all retain water, making a quick blow dry a thing of the past. Speak to your hairdresser to discover the best cut to lighten up your locks.

5.The plait test
The plait test is an easy way to see if your hair is unhappy. Take a small piece of your hair, and put it into a plait. Your plait should have the same thickness all the way down. If tapers off at the end, this means you’ve got split ends, and should visit your hairdresser. Ideally, you should get a trip up to where your plait starts to get thinner, to keep your hair in tip-top condition.
