CeraVe Foaming Cleanser Review: Hydrating Foam Cleanser – Hyped or Not?

I know what you are thinking: is there a CeraVe product this gal hasn't tried? Well yes, actually a lot. But when it comes to cleansers, few names stir up more online buzz than CeraVe. Loved by dermatologists, skincare bloggers, and TikTok skincare junkies alike, the CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser is everywhere. But does it actually live up to its glowing reputation? You know, I had to get this right in my basket and test it. Its taken me a while to use up my other beloved caerave cleanser so I have finally got round to giving this one a really good test.

I’ve tested this foaming cleanser for a few weeks to find out whether it deserves a permanent spot in your skincare routine, especially if you’re dealing with oily skin, acne-prone skin, or a compromised skin barrier.  You might remember I damaged my skin barrier a little while ago because sometimes I am lazy and dont think about what product mix. This is very true after a long day. But I learned my lesson the hard way, didn't I? I am trained in facials and as a make-up artist, so I really should know better, but this is defo my own fault. I have combination skin, normally with some blemishes and dry patches.

Let’s get into my CeraVe foaming cleanser review and see whether this iconic product is really worth the hype, or are my other products just plain better?

CeraVe Foaming Cleanser Review: Is This Hydrating Foam Cleanser Worth the Hype?

The CeraVe Foaming Cleanser claims to do what most foam cleansers don’t—cleanse the skin thoroughly without drying or stripping it. That's a big claim there.  Formulated with 3 essential ceramides, niacinamide, and hyaluronic acid, it’s designed to remove excess oil, dirt, and even makeup, all while helping to strengthen the skin’s barrier.

As someone with combination skin that leans sometimes dry, sometimes oily, I’m always cautious with anything that foams. Most traditional gel cleansers tend to leave my skin feeling tight, dry, or out of balance. So, trying a hydrating foaming cleanser, especially one that’s labelled as gentle, had me curious but sceptical. But I was in need of a little help after my incident with my poor skin barrier.

What is the CeraVe Foaming Cleanser?

This is a gel-to-foam facial cleanser developed with dermatologists, specifically made for normal to oily skin. It’s a fragrance-free, non-comedogenic cleanser with a gel-like texture that lathers well on wet skin.  It's a completely clear consistency, not milky like the CeraVe hydrating cleanser, The formula promises to cleanse and hydrate simultaneously, ideal for those who want a deep clean but don’t want to compromise their skin’s natural moisture. You know what CeraVe are known for.

It’s packed with ingredients that aim to repair and strengthen the skin’s barrier, including Ceramide NP, Ceramide AP, and Ceramide EOP, along with sodium hyaluronate (the salt form of hyaluronic acid) and glycerin to help moisturise as you cleanse.

How Does CeraVe Foaming Cleanser Work?

Unlike harsh cleansers that strip the skin, CeraVe’s foaming facial cleanser uses a blend of gentle surfactants like sodium cocoyl glycinate and coco-betaine to lift away makeup and dirt while maintaining your skin’s lipid barrier. The inclusion of ceramides, cholesterol, and phytosphingosine makes it a standout formula for anyone trying to restore or maintain skin health while still keeping breakouts and excess oil under control.

The foam is light and refreshing, and the gel-like consistency makes it easy to spread without feeling greasy or drying. It doesn’t have the stripping effect you often get from high-lather cleansers. Instead, it leaves the skin feeling clean but not tight, and hydrated without that residue some oil cleansers can leave behind. I have to say I haven't used a foaming cleanser in so long this took some adapting.

Who Should Use CeraVe Foaming Cleanser?

This facial cleanser is a great choice for those with oily skin, normal skin, or acne-prone skin, especially if you’re looking for something gentle enough for daily use but strong enough to keep your skin clear. It’s suitable for sensitive skin thanks to its fragrance-free formula and pH-balanced base. Why aren't all cleaners fragrance-free? You know my feelings on fragrance It doesn't normally affect me much, but it affects so many people's skin. Just give it a miss, Brands you dont need in skincare.

If you’re someone who wears makeup , sunscreen, like me or lives in a polluted city, this cleanser makes an excellent second cleanser after your cleansing oil or balm, too. It helps to remove leftover product, sweat, and grime without disturbing the skin’s microbiome.

Key Ingredients in CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser

We all know I am an ingredient nerd, and I love to really research these for you. I am happy to say CeraVe always leads with its essential ceramide complex, a blend of ceramide NP, AP, and designed to strengthen the skin’s barrier and lock in hydration. Combined with sodium hyaluronate and glycerin, the formula works to cleanse and moisturise in one step. It also contains niacinamide, a popular ingredient in skincare products known for calming inflammation and supporting acne-prone skin.

Other key ingredients include:

  • Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate – a gentle foaming agent

  • Disodium EDTA and citric acid – help balance the formula’s pH

  • Carbomer and xanthan gum – give the product its gel-like texture

How to Use CeraVe Foaming Cleanser in Your Routine

Use it on wet skin both morning and night. Massage a small amount into your face for around 60 seconds, then rinse with lukewarm water. It works perfectly after a cleansing oil if you're double cleansing or on its own as a simple start or end to your day. Follow up with a moisturising cream like CeraVe's Moisturising Lotion or another product rich in ceramides to lock in hydration and dont forget your SPF.

Does CeraVe Foaming Cleanser Leave Skin Feeling Tight?

This is where the CeraVe foaming cleanser really stands out.  I had given up on the whole foaming cleanser market for my combo skin, but even though it foams, it doesn’t leave your skin feeling tight or dry. In fact, after cleansing, my skin felt refreshed, soft, and balanced, not squeaky or dehydrated, something that’s rare for foam-based formulas, especially for drier skin types or people who have a damaged skin barrier.

Can It Remove Makeup and Help with Acne?

While I wouldn’t rely on this cleanser alone to remove heavy makeup, like waterproof mascara, it does a fantastic job at removing light foundation, SPF, and oil buildup.

But you could use it as a second cleanser when you wear heavy make-up, it helps reduce congestion and supports clear skin without overdoing it. Thanks to niacinamide and ceramides, it supports healing, making it a great option for acne-prone skin without being too harsh.

Drawbacks? Just One.

If your skin is very dry or you're using retinoids or acids, you may prefer the CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser or the cerave hydrating foaming oil cleanser for a more nourishing option. Otherwise, this foaming version fits perfectly for anyone needing a deep, gentle cleanse that won’t compromise their skin barrier. You could also alternate these two a couple of times a week with your hydrating, gentle cleanser. I think this one is best for oily and acne-prone skin.

What’s the Verdict on CeraVe Foaming Cleanser?

This is a no-frills, effective cleanser that does what it promises: cleans the skin without stripping it. It fits into almost any skincare routine, works well with moisturisers, and supports barrier repair with every use. It doesn't sting or cause breakouts. Whether you’re dealing with oily skin, sensitive skin, or just looking for an everyday face wash, this one’s a staple.

And honestly? CeraVe’s foaming facial cleanser is a good choice for anyone who wants gentle, dermatologist-backed skincare that just works. It's worth the money

How Much Does CeraVe Foaming Cleanser Cost?

When it comes to affordable skincare that delivers, the CeraVe cleansers in my opinion, always tick every box. In the UK, you can typically find the 236ml bottle priced between £10 and £14, while the larger 473ml size ranges from £16 to £18, depending on where you shop. But I got mine on sale via Amazon for £8.33  for the 236ml, so this was a bargain. It normally lasts me for a few months too.

Available at major retailers like Boots, Superdrug, and of course, Amazon, it’s a solid budget-friendly choice.

My Review

I think I have a problem with how much I love this brand. I have only found one product that hasn't worked for me; the rest I adore. This one is definaly another winner for me.

After using the CeraVe Foaming Cleanser daily, I can say this is one of the most balanced and effective cleansers I’ve tried from the drugstore for when your skin is a bit oily. It cleans without causing breakouts, doesn’t leave my skin feeling tight, and plays nicely with other skincare products like serums, moisturisers, and even actives. My skin tends to get oily in the summer. Does anyone elses or just mine? It's so annoying when your skin does a one-eighty and you have to go buy new products. I like the gel texture and the way it cleanses the skin. My skin feels nice after using this, and it removes my makeup and mascara. I need to use a differnt one to remove my waterproof makeup up but I wear it so rarely that that's not an issue.

If you're looking for a cleanser that’s gentle on the skin, supports your skin barrier, and doesn’t leave you guessing, this is it. Reliable, affordable, and totally worth the hype. I will buy again.
