Why Playa del Carmen’s Riviera Maya resorts are the perfect mix of relaxation and adventure

Choosing a resort stay in Playa del Carmen, in the Riviera Maya, means that you no longer have to pick between lounging in luxury or exploring the wild. You get both thanks to its luxury hospitality and proximity to nature.

Beach bum bliss

Right from the resort, you’re instantly immersed in a rather laid-back atmosphere. Very relaxed, in fact, as you are brought drinks to your table, and some even enjoy swim-up access and rooftop jacuzzis. You don’t need to leave the resort if you don’t want to, most resorts have treatments, sauna, Turkish bath and even hydrotherapy circuits. But, you can also take a stroll to the beach. Within seconds, you’re lying on the sand with the waves brushing your feet.

Snorkelling and underwater adventure

By snorkelling, you may be thinking this is advice to head to the sea and do it yourself. Well, yes, this is possible, but the Ocean Riviera Paradise, which is a Playa del Carmen Riviera Maya Resort, has its own Dive It! Diving Center that serves guests of all levels. So, even first-time snorkellers can go in a small group to learn how to snorkel.

Or, you can opt for an external excursion from the resort which gives you 2 hours of snorkelling, split into two sessions at two distinct reef spots. Perhaps go for this one after you’ve learned the basics at the Dive It! one.

Cenotes & cultural tours

Of course, the adventure aspect means going even further afield. One recommended tour from the region is a multi-cenote adventure. This means you’ll swim in two jungle cenotes, canoe in another, and finish with a dip in a fourth. Incredibly, you can do this all within a half-day.

For those with more time though, a full-day cultural tour is possible from most of the hotels in this area. You will leave early, around 6 AM, to reach the Chichén Itzá archaeological site. From there, you will visit cenotes and the colonial town of Valladolid. This is a 10-hour day out of seeing the most incredible sites that Mexico has to offer - all planned for you.

These excursions add depth to your holiday. While we all want (and need) to enjoy the resorts brilliant restaurants and pool, you also want to feel like you’ve been on an adventure. Swimming in sacred freshwater caves and exploring Mayan history is exactly that. And, when you’re tired, you can kick back for a day or two on-site.

Why Ocean Riviera Paradise stands out for all types of travellers

What makes Ocean Riviera Paradise especially effective here is its flexibility. Families can roam its splash park zone and kids club, while couples can enjoy the adults-only section and spa. Adventure-seekers can dive or day-trip, perhaps letting some of the family head out on a snorkelling trip, while the others stay behind and relax.

Its all-inclusive model makes it easy. Whenever you return to the ground, you can pick up a snack and drink. It somehow merges a “zero effort” luxury holiday with one of history and adrenaline.
