It may be the most memorised series of words in your life… (cleanse, Vitamin C, moisturise, SPF). Yet, it seems as though we always leave a huge portion of our body completely unattended; so much so that we have been leaving it unattended for many years now.
Via UnsplashYour Neck And Chest Are Worth Every Bit Of Attention As Much As Your Face
Everyone applies their serums and sunscreen all the way to their jaw line, then stops. It doesn’t stop at the chin. The neck and chest are significantly thinner and have far fewer oil glands. In addition, both areas typically display signs of sun damage and fine lines before the face. All these issues occur solely due to a lack of attention. The solution? Don’t add another product. Continue applying whatever you were already smoothing onto your cheeks, continue down to the neck, and across the chest. Every time.
Reapply Sunscreen Mid-Day (Not Just At Breakfast)
Once you feel like you’ve completed a successful
morning application of SPF, you think your job is done. However, sunscreens break down within hours. Especially when they come into contact with sweat, heat or humidity from a walk at lunch, etc. Damage rarely occurs in one big moment. It occurs during the period of time between 9 am and 4 pm…when virtually no one is thinking about protecting themselves. Take a lightweight SPF powder or stick and place it somewhere you’ll remember to use it, e.g., your purse, on your desk, in your car, and reapply it once mid-day. This single action is likely to produce more results than any single product you purchase this year.
Clean The Items That Come Into Contact With Your Skin
Your skincare routine doesn’t end at your skin. Night after night, your pillowcases soak up oils, sweat and old product residue. Many go two or three weeks without being washed. Your phone screen constantly presses against your cheek throughout the day. Bacteria build up on
makeup brushes long after they appear dirty. While none of this is exciting, cleaning your pillowcase once per week and wiping down your phone screen will eliminate breakouts that cannot be eliminated by any cleanser.
Treating Your Smile Like A Part Of Your Routine (And Not An Afterthought)
As important to your image as having clear skin is having a radiant, healthy smile. Unfortunately, this is usually the last thing on everyone’s mind. Regularly swapping your toothbrush every few months, using a mild whitening toothpaste, and regularly visiting your
dentist will improve your overall appearance more than people realise. Because it’s something that isn’t visible in a mirror, such as a blemish, it’s an easy thing to overlook.
The Only Habit That Costs You No Money
None of what we mentioned above requires additional products or more time. What it takes is realising that your beauty routine extends beyond just your face and that being consistent with your routine is much more valuable than trying to make things complex. A 10-step regimen where you neglect to attend to your neck will be defeated each and every time by a simple routine that works consistently.
