5 New Things to Try This Winter If You're Bored of the Same Old Routine

Winter has a way of turning into one long stretch of dark mornings, cold evenings and trying to work out what on earth to do when all you really want is to stay under a blanket.

There's nothing wrong with a cosy night in, obviously. But every so often you need a nudge to get out of the house and shake things up a bit. A new season is as good an excuse as any to step outside your usual routine and give yourself something to actually look forward to.

You don't need a big trip or weeks of planning either. Plenty of things worth trying are closer to home than you'd think, including picking up a completely new skill like snowboarding. If you've never stood on a board in your life, snowboard lessons are a decent way to get the basics down and feel less like a baby giraffe before you try to go any further.

If your winter routine is starting to feel a bit stale, here are five things worth putting on your list.

1. Give Snowboarding a Go

Snowboarding isn't usually the first thing people think of when they're after a new winter hobby, especially if it's not something you've ever tried before.

Which is sort of the point.

Doing something totally unfamiliar forces you out of autopilot and gets you focused on something new for a change. You don't need to be sporty, or even particularly adventurous. Everyone starts in the same place: just trying to stand on the board without falling over.

And you probably will fall over. More than once, most likely. Getting back up again is oddly exhausting too.

That's just part of it, though.

Learning something physical, especially something that felt impossible at first, does wonders for your confidence. Once you've cracked it, you might start wondering what else you could take on.

It's also a genuinely good one to do with mates. Learning together means you get to laugh at each other's wobbly first attempts, cheer on the small wins, and commiserate when it all goes a bit wrong.

2. Have a Winter Self-Care Day

Self-care doesn't have to mean a pricey treatment or an afternoon drowning in candles and bath products.

Sometimes it's just about carving out time that's actually yours.

Try building your own winter self-care day from scratch. Start slow, make a proper breakfast, leave your phone in another room for a bit. Spend the afternoon doing whatever relaxes you, then finish with a long bath, your skincare routine, and a film you've been meaning to watch for ages.

Feeling organised? Prep a few little treats beforehand.

Have a go at a face mask, do your own nails, wash and style your hair, or finally try that make-up look you've been saving and never got round to.

The point is making the day feel different from a normal weekend. You don't owe anyone an explanation for taking time for yourself. Rest counts as productive, even when it doesn't feel like it.

3. Go Somewhere You've Never Been

You don't need to travel far to feel like you've had a proper day out.

Pick somewhere new and spend a day poking around it. A nearby town you've never bothered with, a walking route you've not tried, a gallery, a market, or that café you walk past constantly but never actually go into.

If you're normally a planner, try leaving some room for spontaneity instead.

Take a different route than usual. Pick somewhere purely because it looks interesting. Go for a walk without worrying too much about distance.

There's something quite nice about seeing a familiar area from a totally different angle.

Winter also gives you some lovely photo opportunities. Wrap up, grab your phone or camera, and make a proper day of it.

You could even turn it into a small challenge: photograph things you'd normally walk straight past, whether that's interesting buildings, seasonal decorations, or just how the light looks in winter.

4. Pick Up a New Beauty Skill

If beauty's already your thing, winter's a good excuse to try something you've never attempted before.

Maybe there's a make-up look you've always wanted to master, a hairstyle that seems a bit too complicated, or you're still trying to figure out how to apply false lashes without gluing them to your actual eyelid.

Set aside one evening a week to practise.

Don't expect perfection straight away. Tutorials make everything look deceptively easy, but there's usually a lot of trial and error happening off camera.

Try different techniques, use products you already own, and don't worry if your first go looks nothing like the video.

You could even stick to one skill for the whole winter. By spring, you might be surprised how much better you've got.

It's also a nice way to rediscover things sitting in your make-up bag instead of buying more stuff you don't need.

5. Do Something Creative

When it's cold and grey outside, it's easy to end up scrolling your phone for hours without noticing.

Try giving yourself something creative to do instead.

You don't need to think of yourself as "artistic" to enjoy a creative hobby. Painting, drawing, photography, journalling, baking, sewing, crafting, or learning to make something you've always admired all count.

Not sure where to start? Pick something small rather than an enormous project.

Decorate a notebook, put together a scrapbook of old memories, learn one simple cake recipe, or spend an afternoon making a few handmade cards.

It doesn't need to be perfect. It just needs to give you a break from work, chores and everything else, and let you focus on making something with your hands for a bit.

You might even find a hobby that sticks around long after winter's gone.

Make This Winter Feel Different

The best thing about trying something new is that it doesn't have to turn into a lifelong obsession.

Sometimes it's enough just to break up the routine and give yourself an experience you wouldn't normally have.

Whether that's learning a new winter sport, treating yourself to a self-care day, exploring somewhere unfamiliar, playing with your beauty routine, or picking up a creative hobby, the main thing is giving yourself permission to actually try.

Winter doesn't have to mean sitting around waiting for spring to arrive. It can be a chance to slow down, have a bit of fun, and maybe learn something about yourself in the process.

So if your routine's feeling a bit repetitive, pick one thing off this list and give it a go. You never know where it might lead.
