Designer Andrea Ricci explained the appeal clearly when she told Who What Wear, “I’ve worn cummerbunds for years and always wished I could style them over dresses or coats.”

The important words there are “over dresses or coats.” They move the piece away from occasion dressing and toward layering. Once viewed that way, the styling possibilities become much broader: satin can contrast with wool, a dark sash can give shape to an oversized shirt, and a bright version can provide the only strong color in an otherwise restrained outfit.

Over the past three awards seasons, several highly photographed male actors have worn it at major events, giving the accessory something fashion trends need before they can move beyond the catwalk: repeated public examples of how it can actually be worn. These are not necessarily formal endorsements of the accessory. What matters is visibility. The same waist detail has now appeared with traditional tuxedos, open shirts, wider trousers and deliberately altered versions of black tie.

• Adam Brody offered one of the clearest early examples at the delayed 75th Emmy Awards on January 15, 2024. He arrived in a black tuxedo with a black bow tie and cummerbund, pushing the look toward the more complete version of traditional evening dress at a time when many male red-carpet outfits were becoming simpler. The Washington Post specifically singled him out for taking the evening’s formality “another notch” with the waist covering.

• Jonathan Bailey moved the idea further at the 76th Emmys on September 15, 2024. His tuxedo used wide-legged trousers, a shimmering silk shirt and a cummerbund, but removed the bow tie entirely. GQ noted that Bailey and fellow actor Matt Bomer both made the waist detail central to tuxedos worn with open shirts. Bailey’s version is particularly relevant to the current fashion shift because it separated the cummerbund from the strict formula normally surrounding it. The waist remained formal and controlled while the neckline became relaxed. It demonstrated that designers and stylists could keep one traditional element while discarding several others.

• Paul Mescal offered another variation during the Cannes Film Festival in May 2025. At the Women in Motion Awards, he wore a black tuxedo with a matching cummerbund and a cream silk shirt, but left the shirt open rather than finishing the outfit with a conventional bow tie. A small gold cufflink fastened through the shirt placket became the main piece of decoration. Again, the waist covering stayed while other parts of standard black tie were removed.

How to wear a cummerbund without looking like you are heading to a black-tie event

The easiest way to make the cummerbund trend feel modern is to stop thinking of it as something that belongs exclusively with a tuxedo. Its most interesting quality is actually its shape. A wide band worn around the waist can change the proportions of an outfit, create definition and make a fairly simple look feel much more considered.

One of the easiest ways to try the look is by wearing a wide cummerbund-style belt over a dress. This works particularly well with looser or flowing silhouettes because the waist creates a contrast against the softer shape of the fabric. A black version can make a printed or colourful dress feel more structured, while a contrasting shade can become a statement accessory in its own right.

Oversized shirts and blazers are another natural pairing. A wide belt worn over a crisp white shirt can instantly change the silhouette, while wearing one over a blazer or lightweight coat creates a more fashion-led look without requiring an entirely new wardrobe. Is the cummerbund actually wearable outside the runway?

Wide-leg trousers, oversized shirts, relaxed tailoring and loose dresses can all benefit from something that visually brings the waist back into the outfit. Rather than adding another complicated layer, the belt becomes the detail that pulls everything together.

That may be why the cummerbund is having a moment now. Fashion is increasingly interested in accessories that can change the shape of an outfit rather than simply decorate it. The runway appearances and celebrity styling all point towards the same thing: this is no longer an accessory that belongs to one particular occasion. It has become another styling tool, one that can completely change the shape and feel of an outfit.

And perhaps that is exactly why it feels interesting again. Fashion has taken something incredibly specific and made it much more open to interpretation. The cummerbund has left the tuxedo behind, and suddenly, it can go almost anywhere.
