No Time Is No Excuse!

Hi everyone

Just because you have no time, it doesn’t mean that you can get away with not exercising. It is incredibly important to get fit, no matter how old you may be, and to maintain this healthy lifestyle. And a busy work and personal schedule shouldn’t be enough to stand in your way!

But if your diary is jam-packed with various appointments and events, how exactly are you meant to stay on top of your fitness? Here are some tips that should show you a healthy and active lifestyle is possible no matter how busy you may be!

Do Yoga In Front Of A Movie

After a busy day in the office, most of us just want to get home and unwind in front of the TV. Well, why not combine that with some fitness? You will be able to do some really relaxing Yoga, or Pilates poses while you are watching your favorite movie or TV series. You can then stay fit while you are chilling out!

Take Your Work Breaks Outside

If you work in an office all day, you will find that you are sedentary most of the time. This isn’t going to do your health any good whatsoever! The best way to combat this is to take your breaks outside. Even if you only have fifteen minutes, you will still be able to squeeze a walk around the block. Then when you return, the blood will be pumping around your body, and you will find it a lot easier to concentrate at your desk.

Eat Positively

Eating a poor diet while working at a desk all day is a recipe for a health disaster! So, you need to think positively when you prepare a packed lunch for work. Prepare healthy salads and hearty soups as these will fill you up but won’t bloat you. It’s also worth thinking about some fat burners as these can help you burn calories while you are sitting at your desk. These metabolism-boosting supplements will be very effective when taken as part of a nutritious diet.

Do Combo Workouts

If you only have less than half an hour for your workouts, it’s worth doing a combo workout. These are exercises that combine a number of different moves and positions, and they will target different parts of the body. Most combo workouts are strength training exercises, but you will be able to work some cardio in there as well. For example, jump squats are a great way to get your pulse racing while also strengthening your leg muscles!

Work At The Treadmill

Do you get bored pounding the treadmill? Why not do some work at the same time! You could read some important contracts or do some marking if you are a teacher. If you don’t feel comfortable working while working out, you might just want to bring a book so you can read that while you are busy exercising!

As you can see, having too much to do is no excuse for not working out. There are plenty of ways to sneak in some exercising!

5 Benefits To Exercise You May Not Have Known

Hi everyone,

We all know that exercise is good for us. But few of us realise just how much of our body is positively affected by leading an active lifestyle. Here are just a few health benefits of exercise that you may not even know in case you needed that extra motivation to get off the sofa.

It improves your immune system

By exercising regularly, you may be helping to fight off bugs and flus more effectively than you would be otherwise. Exercise causes your heart to beat faster and therefore causes white blood cells and antibodies to circulate the body quicker, catching illnesses more quickly. Exercise also causes you clear out your airways, expelling any bacteria from your lungs that might develop into an infection. On top of this, exercise is great for combating stress. Stress itself lowers our immunity by focusing bodily functions elsewhere, whilst a workout is able to reverse this process and focus function back to the immune system.

It helps your digestion

When we are active, our digestive system is also more active, breaking down food at a faster rate. This is good for preventing and combating constipation. On the opposite end of the scale, exercise can also be good for combating diarrhoea. When taken with medicine for conditions such as IBS, exercise can help flush out bad bacteria causing a leaky gut. By improving immunity, it can also prevent such bugs from taking hold in the first place.

It helps your brain

Research has found that exercise can often leave us with a clearer head afterwards allow us to concentrate more effectively. This may be because exercise clears out all old oxygen from the body and replaces it with fresh new oxygen which is essential for brain function. Studies have found that those that exercise before arriving at work are able to concentrate better.

It reverses alcohol damage

Excessively drinking alcohol is bad for almost every organ in the body. One effect is the weakened ability for the brain to communicate messages. Scientists have found by studying white matter in the brain that heavy drinkers that don’t exercise a lot have more damaged white matter, affecting this communication. However, studies have found that those that drink a lot but also exercise a lot don’t have this brain damage showing that perhaps a workout can be the perfect antidote to alcohol.

It improves your sex life

It’s also been found that those that exercise often can have an improved sex life. Part of this is the fact that aerobic training can help increase stamina in bed. There’s also evidence to suggest that exercise gets rid of stress, which itself can kill our sex drive. As discussed earlier, stress triggers a survival mode within us which causes our body to focus on more immediate concerns rather than the likes of digestion or indeed reproduction. By exercising, you may find yourself de-stressing and developing a sex drive once more.

Turn Your Passion For Fitness Into A Career

Hi everyone

Most people who currently occupy professional roles in the UK health and fitness industry will tell you that they got into their current business because they were interested in health, fitness and exercise and were regular gym users or sports practitioners.
If you have an interest or passion for any aspect of health and fitness, you might like to consider turning your interest into a career.

The first step is to think about what you envision yourself doing in your new career. It will probably be something related to whatever currently interests you about fitness. Maybe you just have a general liking of sports and exercise, or perhaps you’re interested in something specific like Pilates or sports massage therapy.
Another thing to consider is whether you’d prefer a role in which you train a single person at a time, or whether you’d be comfortable teaching fitness classes consisting of a large number of people.
There is, unfortunately, no legal requirement that people have any sort of professional qualification in order to work in the UK fitness industry, but without an accredited qualification, no fitness establishment will hire you, as there insurance won’t protect them against injury claims from people injured while under the care of any of their staff members who aren’t properly qualified.

You also won’t be able to get limited liability insurance for any business you want to set up yourself, such as that of a freelance personal trainer, meaning you’ll be personally liable for the cost of any injuries anyone sustains while under your supervision. In worst case scenarios this can land you in debt for the rest of your life.

Once you’ve thought about all these things and have an idea of what sort of fitness career you’d like to forge for yourself, it’s time to compare the different vocational training providers and find the right qualification to start you out.
Something to be aware of is that there are different levels of qualification in the fitness sector, and that some of the more complex level 3 or 4 courses require you to also have achieved a level 2 qualification.

For example, if you want to be a personal trainer, you’ll need to complete a level 2 gym instructor course before you can take the level 3 personal training course.
This doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ll have to undergo two periods of training, however, as many providers will let you study two courses in a combined training package, so for example study a level 2 gym and a level 3 personal training course at the same time.
Some roles in the fitness industry can filled by persons with only one qualification at the entry level, such as an aerobics instructor, a position which requires only a level 2 exercise to music qualification.
Once you’ve identified the qualification you’ll need in order to begin your new career, you need to consider the matters of scheduling and funding.

If you have existing work or family commitments, it might not be practical for you to put everything else on hold while you undergo two or more weeks or full-time study at a training centre somewhere.

It is for precisely this reason that training providers allow flexibility with their course scheduling. Most give their aspiring fitness professionals the option of full-time or part-time study. Some are so flexible that they allow all of the course material to be studied online.

Regarding funding, fitness industry training courses can cost anywhere from a few hundred to more than a couple thousand pounds, depending on the specific course you do and the training provider you do it with.
If you’ve got savings and can pay your course fees in one lump sum, that’s great, but many people prefer to apply for a finance package that will let them pay for their training with monthly instalments.

Most training providers offer finance to students, but the terms will be differ with each provider. Some providers will provide 0% finance; others will add interest onto the monthly payments. Make sure you understand the terms and conditions of any finance package thoroughly before purchasing.

Any provider will likely require you to undergo a credit check before being accepted for finance, so if you need assistance paying for your course, it helps to have paid off any outstanding credit card debit you’ve accumulated.
If you’ve never paid for anything on credit before, you might not actually have a detectable credit score, in which case you should take out a credit card, use it to buy something relatively inexpensive and pay off the debt amount immediately. Doing this should generate an initial positive credit rating that will make you eligible to receive finance for a fitness industry training course.

Once you’ve completed your training and are a qualified fitness professional, you’ll be eligible to enter the fitness industry and find work. Some newly qualified professionals set themselves up as entirely independent businesses right from the start, instead of working at a fitness establishment or for an existing fitness business.

Most industry experts would recommend waiting until you have a guaranteed means of income before going it alone. This usually means waiting until you’ve got a list of clients who have indicated that they are willing to pay for whatever service you provide for the foreseeable future.

Finally, do not expect success and clients to come automatically just because you have a qualification. The fitness industry is very competitive, and to be successful, you need to work smart as well as hard. Learn as much as you can about how to market yourself and grow your client list using both physical and Web-based marketing methods.

Six Tips To Make Your Diet a Success

Hi everyone,

Dieting is hard, but sometimes it’s a necessary evil. Whether you’re doing it for health reasons, to change your appearance, or to fit a dress for a special occasion, it can be hard to stay on the right track. But, it’s such a vital part of losing weight. While exercise is great and helps a huge amount - not much will change if your diet doesn’t. If you’re already dieting, and want some exercise tips, then why not check out a recent blog post about the best gym equipment to have at home?

If you’re struggling to stick to your diet, don’t worry. Everyone who’s ever dieted has been there too! Here’s some top tips to help you stick it out.

1. Make achievable changes

If you’re going to diet successfully, there’s no point choosing one that’s completely unachievable. You need to make changes that you can stick with, and not ones that are completely unreasonable. It’s unlikely that you’ll never eat a pizza or chocolate bar again - so don’t start thinking you can. ‘Cheat nights’ are fine - as long as they happen very occasionally! If a diet is to be sustainable, it has to be enjoyable too. You won’t stick to it if you can’t eat nice meals. But there are plenty of methods out there that let you eat tasty meals - you might just need to experiment and see what works for you.

2. Learn new recipes

It can be hard to diet if you don’t know what to cook. If you’re tired and hungry, you just want simple comfort food that you can whip up in a second. And that’s where most diets go wrong. So, invest in a good recipe book. Find one that deals exclusively with weight loss, and pick out some meals that sound good and within your skill level. Then, get practicing! It’ll take a while before you can make them without reading the recipe, but the more you can learn, the better armed you’ll be. Here’s a few to get you started.

3. Control those cravings

Sugar addiction is just as real as smoking or alcohol. And that means it can be quite hard to kick it. Try to find suitable replacements - sweet fruits, maple syrup, natural honey and natural jam are a good place to start. And, as mentioned below, if you don’t have it in your home, hopefully you’ll be less tempted too. Apple cider vinegar is another trick to try - it’s said to help curb any sugar cravings, so if you’re struggling, give it a go. This is a great article to help you cut those cravings out for good.

4. Shop sensibly

If you don’t have it in the house, you can’t eat it! So, once a week you should sit down and write out a meal plan, including breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a few snacks in between. Then, write your shopping list using that. Hopefully, if you’re controlled when you shop, you won’t sneak any sugary treats into your basket! And then if there’s nothing in the house, you’ll be made to eat healthily - until it becomes habit, rather than through will power and force.

5. Give your diet a boost

All the celebs are doing it, so why shouldn’t you? One easy way to help your diet succeed is to try diet supplements. Packed with natural herbs and fruit extracts, they’re a great way to give your body the nutrients it needs, without eating too many calories.

6. Drink plenty of water

Many people confuse hunger with thirst. So, next time you’re feeling hungry and it’s not a meal time, try drinking a glass of water. This will make you feel full, and it’s great for your health. You should aim to drink six to eight glasses of water a day, but you might need more depending on how much exercise you’re doing!

6 Natural Ways to Maintain Beautiful Skin

Hi everyone,

There may not be a fountain of youth where we can bathe our skin in on a monthly basis, but the food we eat and products we use all have an effect on the state of our skin. Your body needs nutrients to fight off damage and vitamins to reproduce cells. It’s not just our mental health and stress levels which benefit from fruit, veggies and a good night’s sleep, but our physical appearance too! Here are my top ways to give your skin a boost, without putting any nasty chemicals onto it.

Stay hydrated

Being just a little bit dehydrated causes your body to not work at its optimum level, and when your body needs water, your skin will be dull, loose and flakey. The recommended amount of water per day is 3.7 litres, but if you exercise frequently or live at altitude or somewhere hot, you will probably need to consume more.

Limit sun exposure

Small amounts of exposure to sunlight are good for your skin, and vitamin D is good for our wellbeing, but there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. Overexposure to the sun can cause irreparable damage to your skin and can be the culprit of scarring, premature ageing and sun spots. If you must be in the sun for long periods of time, don’t forget to use a high SPF sunscreen and to wear a hat.

Use natural skin products

Many skin care products contain harsh chemicals which dry out and irritate your skin. By choosing organic skin care, you are choosing to cover your skin in nature’s best gifts. Be sure to check the packaging for a list of ingredients to be sure that what you are buying is good for you first.

Consume antioxidants

Antioxidants are the best chance we can give our body for fighting off infection, disease, and ageing. These foods all work to decrease inflammation and wrinkles, meaning that it really is true when they say you are what you eat. Some of the best sources of antioxidants are:
  • Acai berries
  • Blueberries
  • Pomegranate
  • Spinach
  • Raspberries
  • Goji berries
  • Organic green tea
  • Dark chocolate
  • Nuts
  • Seeds
  • Purple grapes

It is also important to remember that your body and skin need a full range of nutrients, vitamins, and antioxidants to stay healthy, so when you are thinking about your meals, choose foods which are bright in colors rather than just beige!

Your skin rejuvenates and repairs at night when you are sound asleep. If you are tired and unrested, you will likely have dark circles around your eyes and your skin will look as dull and tired as you feel! Where possible, try and get in a full eight hours of snoozing a night.

Exercise often

Exercising isn’t only good for your fitness and health, but your skin too. By exercising and sweating, more oxygen circulates, and antioxidants make their way through your pores and onto your skin, which makes it both clearer and firmer.
