How to Prep Your Skin for a Sunless Tan

For that year-round tan and healthy summer glow, you don't need to spend all day in the sun. Sunless tanning is the safe and easy way to keep your skin looking gorgeously bronzed but preparing your skin before applying tanner is key.

Here are the top tips on how to achieve a flawless fake tan finish.

Exfoliate

A flawless application of self-tanner is all about exfoliation. Fake tanning products love to stick to areas of dry rough skin, which can leave your skin looking patchy and uneven. A good exfoliation with high quality products like the scrubs from the Blue Lagoon Spa for example, will gently remove all dead skin cells, leaving your skin soft, smooth and ready for your self-tan application.

Prep your Face

When it comes self-tanning, preparing the skin on your face is just as important as the skin on your body. As facial skin is more delicate, be sure to choose an exfoliator that won't irritate sensitive facial skin. Diluting your self tanning product with some of your usual moisturizer can also help to blend it better into all areas of the face, leaving you with a more even and natural result.

Pick the Perfect Time

Although it can be tempting to apply fake tan to freshly waxed legs, the reality is this can leave you with an uneven tanning result. It is best to wait a full 24 hours after waxing or shaving so the skin has time to settle down and any redness or irritation is gone. On the other hand, if you have just applied your fake tan, wait a few days before booking your waxing appointment - otherwise it will ruin all your hard work and simply remove the top layer of skin you have painstakingly tanned!

Moisturize

Moisturizing your skin will help to create a supple surface to really lock in your fake tan product. Not only will this give you a great initial result, it will also help to extend the life of your sunless tan too. For the best sunless tanning result, leave a few hours between applying your moisturizer and your fake tan. That way, your skin will be an even canvas but still dry enough that your tanning product can be absorbed by the skin and won't just slip right off.

Aftercare

To keep your sunless tan looking perfect, aftercare is very important. Don't use scrubs or exfoliating products until you are ready to remove your tan for reapplication, and always remember to moisturize daily to keep your skin as smooth as possible. If you enjoy topping up your fake tan with some sunshine, this is safe to do and won't affect your existing sunless tan but always make sure to wear a high-level SPF to protect your skin.
