How to start as a blogger

I get asked a lot about my job. I am a full-time blogger. I am sat in the roasting heat of Andorra right now. I spend most of my time working from the comfort of my own home. Yes, I love it. I have the freedom to do long trips abroad and still work. I set my own hours and quite often work with my Dalmatian on my knee. Hard but there is no choice sometimes. I thought it would be fun to answer the most asked questions I get.  What do you need to be a blogger?

First and foremost you need to put in the work. I did not wake up one day and have paid work coming it. I did a lot of grafting to get to where I am. As Madonna once sang. I am living in a material world and I am a material girl. Well not quite but we all have bills we have to pay. You have to start somewhere and I started like everyone else with no experience and making no money.

You need to have the drive. I work between 8 to 16 hours a day. Yes, sometimes more. I am constantly on my phone, iPad or MacBook. Whether I am applying for work, answering emails or updating my social media or writing, this job is not for the lazy at heart. It can be antisocial at times. But the benefits outweigh the negatives I promise.

When you are starting out there are basics you will need. Internet, a blog, A laptop or computer, topics you are passionate about and as I said the drive. I live very rurally in the Highlands of Scotland and fibre broadband is a must for me. I could not do this job without it. If you have been following me for a while you will know I love a bargain and am always on the hunt for a great deal. Here I can help you I have found this great broadband comparison site.  Best of all it compares fibre broadband deals. All you need to do is pop in your postcode and let Cable. Find the best deal in your area. This has saved me a lot of money. I mean a lot. They have found over 100 deals for me to choose from starting at £22 per month.

When you start out there is more expensive than you would think so saving some money on broadband is amazing. Go and check them out. I feel like I am letting you in on a secret here. The secret to saving money that is.

Do not expect something for nothing. This goes two ways you need to get a following and keep a following. This is harder than you would think. I find the best way to be is complete honesty. I am if anything in both work and my personal life far too honest. I would rather be this way than the other.

Remember do not start a blog with the intentions of becoming a famous multimillionaire blogger. This is like finding a needle in a haystack. Just be you, That is what people will want to see and let your following grow because of who you are. The more real and relatable you are the better.

Remember when you work with anyone whether it be a brand or PR or marketing agency,  be polite. No matter who you are manners cost nothing. I remember when the first brand I ever worked with sent me an email. I could not believe how lucky I was and still am. Celebrate the wins. The brand I am talking about still contacts me today and I have a brilliant relationship with them. I have gone from them sending me items to review to now getting paid work with them. Relationships are the key to this industry. Remember to be honest with the brand and communicate with them. This is the key to a long-lasting and happy partnership.

Make friends. The blogging world can be lonely. So go on Facebook and find blogging groups. We are a friendly bunch and we have all been where you are now. So we can help you with the question you need help with or at least point you in the right direction. Never copy another blogger. This is a hard and fast rule. There is only one you and only one me. You are not me and I am not you. Stay true to you.

Remember the key is to love what you are doing. This is a hard industry and can be thankless at times but I love my job. I love to write and that is the key thing for me. If like me you love to write. Set up a blog and get started. I hope to see you around.
